Chief Information Security Officer

The University of Akron

The University of Akron, Information Technology Services Department is seeking to fill the position of Chief Information Security Officer. Primary responsibilities will include: Developing and administering a University-wide IT security strategic plan and program; designing and updating information security and privacy policies and standards; developing business cases for security initiatives; planning, executing and evaluating security programs; preparing cost and budget estimates; working with IT to ensure security issues are addressed; collaborating with other government, higher education and private sector security officers on security-related initiatives; overseeing incident response planning and security breach investigations; serving as chief incident manager to whom incidents are reported; supervising development of security awareness and training programs; providing ombudsman services for disputes; fielding complaints and requests; exercising discretion and independent judgment to develop and implement appropriate policies, procedures, standards and guidelines to ensure the security of The University of Akron’s information security and information technology environments; participating as a member of the Information Technology Security Planning Committee to provide pertinent security information and input strategic and tactical planning, budget preparation, initiatives, project planning and coordinate the development and execution of effective security programs; directly supervising and evaluating work as a first-line supervisor over non-exempt staff including hiring, terminating, and disciplining; providing functional guidance and project leadership over exempt staff; leading a team of highly trained technical personnel and consultants; forming, managing and leading advisory committees; interacting effectively with law enforcement agencies, risk and data managers, auditors, consultants and stakeholders; planning and supervising needed resources and personnel; setting and meeting program goals and adjusting to changing priorities.


Required Qualifications:

Relevant Bachelor’s Degree; a combination of education, experience and training must qualify as an information security expert; current security certification, including but not limited to CISSP or CISM; minimum of 10 years of information technology experience including 5 years of enterprise-wide experience in the information security field; expertise to understand the technical and business environment; familiarity with national security standards; experience with business continuity, disaster recovery, auditing, risk management, vulnerability assessments, contract/vendor negotiations, cyber-security and incident management; proven ability to serve as an effective member of a senior IT management team; experience with PCI, FERPA, HIPAA and Gramm-Leach-Bliley; excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills and the ability to communicate to executive management by translating technical issues/solutions into business terms.


Preferred Qualifications:

PMP certification.
