Under the direction of the Credit Center Manager the Consumer Credit Underwriter is responsible for conducting credit analyses consisting of gathering, analyzing and interpreting credit information for existing and prospective customers in order to assess credit quality and to minimize risk and potential loss on banking relationships, including consumer loans, private banking, portfolio mortgage loans, and residential construction loans.


1. Underwrite all consumer loan types entered into the system if a higher priority is not present.
2. Provide further analysis on relationships in excess of established thresholds for Consumer products, Private Banking products, residential construction loans and portfolio mortgages.
3. Analyze personal financial statements, personal tax returns, credit reports, and business tax returns to identify and analyze risks and repayment ability.
4. Evaluate the adequacy of loan structure and collateral.
5. Summarize findings in a Credit Center underwriting presentation which will be utilized by the designated approval authorities as a basis for the approval decision.

Underwriting will summarize borrower’s repayment ability; potential credit risks; identification of loan policy exceptions; and proposed improvement to loan structure.
6. Summarize credit risk through providing a “Credit Admin Comment” to be included in Credit Center underwriting presentation.
7. Review the retail and commercial loan file documentation for accuracy and compliance with approval and legal requirements as needed.
8. Demonstrate knowledge of Heartland policy and regulatory requirements for aggregating exposure and identify appropriate approval authority for each request.
9. Develop working relationships with Bankers throughout Heartland to increase the effectiveness of the Credit Center and improve turn around time.
10. Possess a working knowledge of consumer lending laws and regulations and perform the steps necessary to document all loan requests as required by regulation.
11. As needed, contact Banker or Senior Bank Management to discuss details of loan requests.
12. Assist other Credit Center underwriters on more complex applications that require a higher level of personal and business knowledge or expertise.
13. Complete annual E-Learning Plans and bank Secrecy Act (BSA) training as assigned and keeps up-to-date knowledge of BSA as it relates to the job function.
14. Perform other duties as assigned.

1. Bachelor’s degree in business or finance.
2. 3-5 years of related experience as a credit analyst or commercial loan officer.
3. Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
4. Understanding of credit analysis, risk analysis and accounting and finance principles.
5. Thorough knowledge of consumer lending, appropriate banking laws and regulations, and bank policies and procedures preferred.
6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of customer and credit information.
7. Demonstrated proficiency in organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines, with the ability to adapt within a changing environment.
8. Sound judgment and decision making ability.
